About the work

Lowry’s fascination with the sea is well documented and upon retiring in the 1950s he began to spend more time in the North East of England, often staying at the Seaburn Hotel in Sunderland, not far from South Shields. Here Lowry could explore his passion of seascapes. ‘Ferry Boats’ was painted in 1960 and mixes Lowry’s famous industrial crowds with a seascape. Even when he was not situated in a city setting, Lowry's fascination was always the friction between the frenetic hustle and bustle of human life, and the ever present reminder of industry and progress. We see the familiar motifs of billowing smoke and tram lines as a backdrop to swathes of people with Lowry's characteristic blank skies. Published by Venture prints in 1972 and stamped by the fine art trade guild.
